History of Grama Panchayat

The indigenous "Kani" tribe was the original inhabitants of this place. Long ago, this region was under the hands of around twenty chieftains. The Vithura and Tolikode areas were granted by the Maharaja to around twenty people who depended on him. Remote and far away from human settlements, this hilly area was rich in forest products and agricultural produce. Some believe that the name Vithura originated because it was such a far-off, distant (Vidurasthamaya) place.

A few people from Vithura actively participated in the Indian independence movement. Among them, Govindan Kutti Mudalali served as the president of the agitation committee. It was in November 1938 that freedom fighters from Vithura marched to Kowdiar Palace.

The K.P.S.M. Library, established in 1926, played a significant role in Vithura's cultural sphere. The first school in Vithura began functioning in 1902. Today's Thiruvananthapuram–Ponmudi route was originally the pathway used by Sree Moolam Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore when traveling to Ponmudi for retreat.

The first bus service in this panchayat started in 1934, operated by an open-bodied "Journey-put" vehicle. The earliest places of worship in Vithura are the Makki Sastha Temple and the Maruthwamala Maha Ganapathy Temple. The Bonacaud region in this panchayat continues to attract a large number of tourists
